John Russell (1745-1806) was a British artist with a passion for the Moon! Russell made telescopic observations of the orbiting celestial body and created highly detailed pencil sketches of the lunar surface. In October 2018, writer Gina Tomaine penned an essay for Philadelphia magazine about the local popularity of tarot reading and astrology. Art director Alyse Moyer hired local illustrator James Boyle to design three Philadelphia-themed tarot cards. After the article was published, an overwhelmingly positive response spurred the creation of a full deck!
