Theodore Jasper (1814 – 1897), a Prussian born doctor who pursued his interest in ornithology as an illustrator, painted the original for this c. 1880 chromolithograph of eight species of North American owls, for “Studer’s Popular Ornithology.” This rendering of Jasper’s work is a fine example of the variety of color achievable with the relatively new process of chromolithography. Blue jays are a common North American songbird with brightly colored blue, white, and black plumage, and are intelligent social songsters! They are more than just singers though, they are adept at mimicking the calls of hawks and other birds of prey, in order to provide warnings to their flock, or tricking other species into believing a hawk is nearby.
