Theodore Jasper (1814 - 1897), a Prussian born doctor who pursued his interest in ornithology as an illustrator, painted the original for this c. 1880 chromolithograph of eight species of North American owls, for "Studer's Popular Ornithology." This rendering of Jasper's work is a fine example of the variety of color achievable with the relatively new process of chromolithography. The work is framed in a distressed silver leaf moulding from Furst Brothers' "Perle" collection and TruVue “Premium Clear” glass.
