Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902 – 2000) came from a lineage of Kyoto artists with a heritage tracing back to the Keicho era. His artistic passion was for “sosaku hanga,” a Japanese art movement where artists took complete control of the process, from design to printing! Woodblock printing was introduced to Japan in the early 7th century from the Asian continent, and was first used to mass produce sacred Buddhist texts. Today, woodblock printing has largely been replaced by modern equipment, but some artists still employ these ancient techniques to create works in a variety of styles.
