In the early 1800’s there was an extensive conspiracy, hatched by those held in bondage and their allies, aimed at destroying slavery in Virginia. “Gabriel’s Rebellion” and, several years later, the “Easter Plot” were two failed revolts of the era. This original c.1802 legal document details a court case related to these events. It specifically pertains to the trial of Jacob, a negro man being the property of Edward Tucker who, through insurrection, allegedly “facilitated the murder” Solomon, a negro man being the property of William Carr. This original c.1802 legal document details the official release of the body of Jacob, a “negro man slave” owned by Edmund Tucker, to the custody of the Halifax County, VA prison system. Jacob was charged and convicted with “consulting, advising and conspiring to rebel and make an insurrection” in the company of others. The USCT was a branch of the Union Army established in 1863, primarily consisting of African American soldiers. These troops played a crucial role in the Civil War, comprising over 10% of the Union Army by the end of the conflict. The banners they carried often displayed messages of hope, faith, and the promise of freedom. We’ve framed front and back canvas print reproductions of one such banner for the USCT Museum in LaMott, PA using a sturdy fabric mount to Gatorboard and a metal moulding from Crescent Brands.
