“Africa in Bloom #2” is a signed, limited edition photograph by local Philadelphia artist Michael K Wilson. About the piece, Wilson writes: “Africa in Bloom is an ongoing project which began in 2005, during my first trip to Ghana and Ethiopia. This photographic intervention is a visual response to the reference of Africa being “the Dark Continent '', coined by explorer Henry Morton, in addition to Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novel “The Heart of Darkness”, who presumed Africa to be a void and mysterious land. These ahistorical narratives are reflected in the digitally altered black background, however emerging from them are beautiful flowers I came across during my time on the Continent. The various flowers symbolize the diverse abundant beauty that Africa has always produced since the dawn of civilization.” We archivally presented the photograph in a shiny pewter moulding from Roma’s “Lavo” collection, black matting from Bainbridge, and Tru Vue Museum glass.
