Entitled “Mt. Fuji in Mist,” this original 1932 woodblock print was created by Takahashi Shotei (1871–1945). Born in Tokyo, he initially apprenticed under his uncle, Matsumoto Fuko, and in 1907, publisher Watanabe Shozaburo recruited him to help meet growing Western demand for ukiyo-e woodblock prints inspired by the style of the historical masters. Check out this awesome signed printer’s proof we recently framed by African-American artist John Thomas Biggers (1924-2001). Sugakudo Nakayama was a 19th-century “ukiyo-e” (multi layered woodblock print) artist who was most active between 1850 and 1861. He’s best known for his ultra realistic depictions of birds and flowers, such as this example featuring a goldcrest on a camellia branch.
