This silk scarf pays tribute to the tradition of sweetgrass basket weaving, an art form brought to the Americas by enslaved Africans in the 17th century. These handwoven baskets were originally used in the rice-growing regions of the American South to winnow harvested rice. By gently tossing the grain into the air, the lighter chaff would be blown away, while the heavier edible rice fell back into the basket. Today, the craft is both a treasured cultural tradition and a functional art form. We’ve carefully hand sewn and archivally presented this piece in a gold wood profile from Larson Juhl, white rag mat by Artique (Larson Juhl), and TruVue 99% UV filtering and shatter resistant “Conservation” acrylic.

Ock Pop Tok (“East meets West” in Lao) was founded to support the women artists of Laos. Over the years, the company has grown from a small shop into one of the most important textile and artisanal institutions in all of Laos and Southeast Asia! We archivally presented this intricate hand woven work in a shadow box using a rustic gold profile from Larson-Juhl’s “Spencer” collection, Crescent matting, hand sew mounting, and TruVue 99% UV filtering and anti-reflective “Museum” glazing.
