Entitled “Mt. Fuji in Mist,” this original 1932 woodblock print was created by Takahashi Shotei (1871–1945). Born in Tokyo, he initially apprenticed under his uncle, Matsumoto Fuko, and in 1907, publisher Watanabe Shozaburo recruited him to help meet growing Western demand for ukiyo-e woodblock prints inspired by the style of the historical masters. This original ukiyo-e woodblock triptych was created by the Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (1786–1865). Kunisada specialized in the ukiyo-e genre, which celebrated the vibrant pleasures of urban life, depicting subjects such as courtesans, kabuki actors, landscapes, and folklore.
