This alphabet triptych comes from “A Folding Alphabet Book” by Monika Beisner. Published in 1982, the book presents each letter of the alphabet with related illustrations on the front and corresponding words on the back. Originally in individual frames, this piece has been in our customer’s family for decades. Founded in 1901, the Society of Illustrators in NYC is the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of illustration in America. This is the 45th year of their “Original Art Show,” an annual exhibit showcasing illustrations from the year’s best children’s books published in the US. Oscar Fabrès (1894 – 1960) was a Chilean illustrator of children’s books and a commercial artist. He studied art in Paris and settled in New York in 1940. Here’s a plate from a c.1943 copy of “Thumbelina“ written by Hans Christian Anderson and illustrated by Fabrès.
