Titled “Tropical Fish on 52nd Street,” this is an original 1935 editorial proof by Don Freeman, created for the New York Herald Tribune. Freeman was a painter and cartoonist, as well as a prolific illustrator and author of children’s books, including “Corduroy.” During his years in New York from the 1930s to 50s, his cartoons reflected the “social realism” tradition, portraying the everyday struggles and socio-political realities of the working class.
