The second of a pair, this piece is an example of zoomorphic Islamic calligraphy—an art form where written script transforms into living shapes. Here, the text becomes a whirling dervish, a Sufi practitioner engaged in the sacred spinning meditation known as Sema. Islamic calligraphy dates back to the late seventh century, and is deeply rooted in the Arabic alphabet and the Quran, with verses often serving as the text of these designs. We’ve archivally presented this piece in a purple beveled wood profile from Larson Juhl, green mat by Crescent Brands with a painted bevel, and TruVue 99% UV filtering and anti reflective “Museum” glass.
